Miro (Prumnopitys ferruginea) grows to 25 metres tall and its trunk to 1 metre in diameter, forming a round-headed tree. It is widely distributed in lowland and high-altitude forests from north Auckland to Stewart Island. Miro is a tree of hillslopes and forested ranges. The big red fruit is a favourite of kereru and kaka in the autumn. The fruit can be collected from the ground or picked from lower branches.

Propagation: Push the fruit into seed raising mix and cover to a depth of 10 mm.
The seed is very slow to germinate and can take two years or more.
Place the seed trays in a dark place (under a hedge is one option) to discourage weed growth until the seedlings appear.
March to July, keep an eye out - fruit can be collected from the ground or picked from lower branches.
